5 Ideal Careers for New Remote Workers

ideal careers for new telecommuters

Are you wondering which careers are best suited for new remote workers? Here are just a few options to get you started.

Telecommuting, remote work, working from home–no matter you call it, this flexible work option has shot into full speed. And it’s about time. As far back as ten years ago Telcoa.Org mentioned a survey showing telecommuting was a top benefit preferred by job seekers, even over health insurance!

How realistic is it, though, for new a employee to telecommute without first working onsite? Most of us know of large corporations, such as Aetna and AT&T, that have formal telecommuting programs. What’s less known, though, is that to telework you often first have to work onsite for a period of time.  Only then, based on onsite performance, you might get approval to work from home.

Cheryl Demas, founder of WAHM.com and author of the work from home book,  It’s a Jungle Out There and a Zoo In Here (Warner Books), suggested that although the concept of remote working has caught on with job seekers and media it still isn’t as big a hit with employers that it should be. Even employers well aware of the benefits of telecommuting are still resistant, especially when it comes to newer employees.

The good news is despite the hesitancy some employers have about new employees working from home, the internet has opened up (and even created!) many professions well suited for new remote workers. So if you’re a job seeker wanting to start fresh and remote with a new company, then here are a few jobs for you to consider:

Freelance Writer

For decades publishers have been open to telecommuting for their veteran journalists. With the onset of blogging, however, freelance writing has taken off, opening doors for even non-journalists.

If you’re a skilled writer you now have unlimited opportunities to work from home. Not only do most businesses own their own blogs, but many blogs are “information businesses” that thrive solely by offering their readers non-stop fresh content.

Bustle.com  is an example of a popular blog (information business), and says they are always looking for “freelance reporters, essayists, writers, and photographers to create original features content.” (Just keep in mind that all blogs have their own writing style to fit their particular audience.)

Headhunter

Brick and mortar recruiting boutiques still exist (somewhere), but many recruiting companies begin and operate completely virtual. These firms are flourishing thanks to skilled headhunters who work from home.

This is a great opportunity to use your experience and start fresh from your home as a recruiter. The flexibility and low overhead are savings passed on to clients, and the job orders keep coming.

Synapse is a virtual firm that has orders coming in throughout North America. This company is looking for remote executive recruiting candidates in both the United States and Canada.

SEO Specialist

Every website owner knows that it’s no good existing if no one even notices. If you are skilled at getting websites found in search engines chances are someone will hire you, even if you’ve never work remotely before.

Years ago, keyword stuffing and numerous other sins were all it took for a website to get noticed. Now, virtual SEO businesses are making a pretty penny digging these sinners out of their graves, or keeping new sites from landing there.

Denver-based Saderra is one such virtual company that knows the value of hiring remote SEO experts.

Social Media Manager

Social media is big business. It’s also scary as it can make or break (often the latter) a company if not carefully monitored. But who has that kind of time?

Thankfully there are companies that have the time and expertise to manage every aspect of social media. These companies make other businesses look good by skillfully responding to negative comments by their customers, creating a sense of community with visitors, and promoting new products or services in a lively manner.

ICUC Social is a firm that hires social media moderators around the globe to help make their clients appear good online.

Lawyer

After all the years spent in law school you can’t help feeling you’ve done your time. You’re ready to go home. Virtual law firms are popping up everywhere as a solution to attorneys’ lack of work-life balance.

BrownTechLegal is one company that offers local candidates that balance. A virtual law firm in New York, they have opportunities in several capacities for you to practice law from home.

It’s so discouraging to meet every requirement for a particular job only to learn a firm won’t let new employees telecommute. To be sure, companies are coming around. But many have a long way to go. Don’t give up, though. As you can see there are companies that operate entirely online, and that means big opportunities for you.

Your turn: Have you ever been denied telework because you were a new employee?
